Introduction

Hi, I am Drew Alders.

I’m from the small community of Woden, a few miles outside of Nacogdoches, Texas. My family farms chickens, cattle, pine trees, and kids. I am the third oldest of 10 children: four boys, six girls. No, we are not Mormon or Catholic.

Currently my profession consists of earning my master’s degree in real estate from Texas A&M University. I graduated from Texas A&M with a B.S. in University Studies in May 2014 and worked in College Station while applying for graduate school.

My short term career interests are to work in commercial real estate brokerage for a highly successful firm. Longer term plans include real estate development and either leading a company or starting my own. These objectives are probably identical to 99% of young professionals in the industry. In other words, I really better excel to meet my goals. Have no fear, I plan to.

The common counsel that’s communicated to our class is the mantra, “you get out of this what you put in.” Over the majority of my undergraduate career, proactive and productive weren’t frequent descriptors of my time in the classroom. The side-effects of that style of study eventually forced me to become a legitimate student. With this program, I am laying the groundwork for my career and the effort I exert now has a direct relation to my trajectory in the future. If four months down the road, I walk away from this class with an understanding of the course objectives on my syllabus I’ll be satisfied. As Professor Elmore eloquently describes, my brain will be the clean glass window and the information I receive in class will be the thrown ball of mud that slides slowly down the pane.

I likes:
        -    I enjoy essentially all American sports
        -    I listen to generally every strain of music though “country” is my default
        -    I read books—only the good ones, if I can help it
        -    I like working hard outside
        -    I like having fun outside: camping, hiking, canoeing, etc.

Bucket list:
        -    Learn how to speak Spanish fluently
        -    Hot air balloon all over Europe (not in one trip, of course)
        -    New Zealand
        -    Scuba dive in beautiful places
        -    Be quoted in the WSJ
        -    Etc.

What is the most fascinating, interesting, or inspiring parcel of real estate from your perspective?  Explain why.

I think the land on which the Dome of the Rock is situated stands apart as one of the most significant pieces of real estate. The land around and under the Dome—which is an ancient mosque—is purported to be the center of the Temple Mount where the Jewish temple stood until its destruction in 70 A.D. Also, Jesus Christ referenced and visited the temple before His crucifixion. In short, three influential religions that in aggregate claim around 54.7 percent of the world's population* have vested interest in the land.
